Mid-Season Championship Night Winners

Orchard Park, New York’s Chris Powers was victorious in the 50 lap Hornets special this past Saturday night as the Holland NASCAR Motorsports Complex raced for Children’s to benefit The Women & Children’s Hospital of Buffalo. It was also Mid-Season Championship Night on the highbanks as the 55th season of racing is halfway completed with for the 2014 racing season. “Downtown” Jeffrey Brown from Hamburg, NY won his second straight Getzoni Agency NASCAR Pro Modified feature of the season. Past Bank of Holland Charger titlist Zach Myers from East Concord, NY won his first feature of 2014. Jonathan Reid from Lockport, NY won the feature event for the NYPA TQ Midgets. Glenwood, NY’s Jason Adams won another M&M U Pull It Figure 8 Car main event while Matt Kuppel from Eden, NY won his first career feature event for the Future 4’s.


Josh Hathaway and Donald Palmer led the Hornets to the green flag for the Hornet main event and third place starter Timmy Catalano jumped quickly into the race lead. Catalano would continue to lead the field around the track for much of the distance until a lap 12 caution for Joe Mastrocicco who came to a stop on the top side of turn three. The restart would see Chris Powers take over command and then Powers and Catalano would dice their way through lap traffic for much of the main event. Powers was able to show the way for the remaining 38 laps to pick up the feature win.

Shawn Nye jumped into the early race lead for the 30 lap feature event for the Getzoni Nationwide Insurance Agency NASCAR Pro Modifieds feature event after getting around pole sitter Tony Carbone. It took just four laps until “The Piranha” TJ Potrzebowski was leading the field around the highbanks. On lap 13, Mike Fiebelkorn Jr worked his way into second place and began his chase of race leader Potrzebowski. Jeff Brown started his trek towards the front of the field as he moved into third following a lap 18 caution. He then moved into second on lap 21 and by lap 25, Brown was being scored as the race leader. Brown would lead the remaining distance to claim his second win of the season. George Skora III edged out Fiebelkorn to take home the runner up spot.


Zach Myers took the early race lead away from Tommy Wentland at the start of the Bank of Holland Chargers main event. Myers would quickly show the hot hand early on as he quickly jumped out in front of the field. Rich Carnes would move into second on lap 13 and began to reel in Myers. Carnes used every inch of the race track to reel in Myers but Myers was too tough as he was able to score the victory. Carnes would come close a couple of times in the late going to get close to Myers but Carnes was able to come home in second.

Jonathan Reid only needed nine laps before jumping to the head of the class in the 20 lap feature distance for the NYPA TQ Midgets. Jim Fleischman showed the way early from his outside pole starting position. Erik Musto moved into the lead on lap three and then lost the lead four laps later to Andy Nye. Reid was able get around Nye on lap nine and pulled away from the field to pick up the victory.

Jason Adams took the lead away from the lead duo of Shane Toms and Joe Mastrocicco III on lap two of the M&M U Pull-It Figure 8 car feature event and never looked back as he went on to score another win. Don Maskell rolled his racer during the main event and was able to climb out of his racer under his own power.

Matt Kuppel led from the drop of the green to score his first career win for the Future 4’s. Alex Deshaies and Kathie Ricketson battled for second along with Mandie Orr for the entire distance.

News and Notes

NASCAR announced on July 11th that it has reached an agreement with Chester, Conn., and Charlestown, N.H.-based Whelen Engineering to enhance its long-standing status as the Official Warning Lights of NASCAR with the additional position as the Official Vehicle Illumination Lights of NASCAR. This will ensure they remain the sponsors of the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series point system.

The Buffalo Niagara Builders Association will be presenting the racing program next Saturday night, July 19. The Getzoni Agency NASCAR Pro Modifieds will be headlining the racing card as they will be competing in twin 25 lap features. The Late Models will be joining the Bank of Holland Chargers, M&M U Pull-It Figure 8’s, NYPA TQ Midgets, and the Future 4’s. Pit Gates will swing open at 3:30 with the grandstands gates opening at 4:45pm with qualifying beginning at 5:00pm with NASCAR feature racing at 7:05pm.
